Applicants should hold a UK upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or higher, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution in Psychology, Counselling, Mental Health Sciences, or a closely related discipline. Postgraduate qualifications and relevant research experience are advantageous.

Published Research Portfolio

Candidates must submit a portfolio of previously published, peer-reviewed scientific work demonstrating a coherent body of research and a significant contribution to psychological science.

The portfolio should include:

A list of relevant peer-reviewed publications, including DOIs where available.
Copies of the publications proposed for doctoral assessment.
A statement outlining the candidate's individual contributions to co-authored publications.

Research may cover areas such as clinical, cognitive, developmental, educational, social, or organisational psychology. The originality, quality, coherence, and scientific significance of the publications will be central to the assessment of eligibility.

Research Statement

Applicants must submit a Research Statement outlining the overarching theme of their published work, its theoretical foundations, methodological approaches, and original contribution to psychological knowledge.

The statement should demonstrate how the publications collectively form a coherent body of research suitable for doctoral assessment, highlighting their implications for psychological theory, research, or professional practice.

Official academic transcripts and degree certificates from previous higher education institutions must be provided, confirming the candidate's academic qualifications and achievements.

Letters of Recommendation

English Proficiency

If English is not your first language, you should have or expect to achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or an accepted equivalent qualification, unless you qualify for an exemption based on previous English-medium education.

Application Process

Applications for our research degrees can be submitted online throughout the year, with new students typically enrolling in September, January, or May.

Applicants must prepare a Research Proposal and a Personal Statement.

While you may indicate a preferred start date, your actual admission date will be confirmed upon receiving an Unconditional Offer, which may differ from your preferred timeframe.

Crafting Your Application

A vital component of your application is the Research Proposal. This document not only demonstrates your capability for doctoral-level research but also allows us to evaluate the project's feasibility and match you with appropriate supervisory expertise. We expect a Research Proposal to be a minimum of 500 words, clearly and concisely presenting your intended research. Please use the provided Research Proposal template to ensure you cover all essential aspects of research objectives and methodology.

Alongside your Research Proposal, please submit:

Details of any prior Research Training,
A Personal Statement elucidating your motivation for pursuing a research degree,
Any additional supporting documents such as English proficiency test results, or reference letters.
