To pursue a PhD by Publication in Psychology at the European Doctoral School (EDS), prospective candidates must demonstrate a strong academic background and an established record of scientific research. The entry requirements are designed to reflect the standards of leading UK universities, ensuring that applicants possess the research experience, scholarly achievements, and intellectual capabilities necessary to demonstrate an original and significant contribution to psychological knowledge.

Educational Background

We welcome applications from European and international researchers and professionals. Applicants should hold a UK upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or higher, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised institution in Psychology, Counselling, Mental Health Sciences, or a closely related discipline. Postgraduate qualifications and relevant research experience are advantageous.

Published Research Portfolio

Candidates must submit a portfolio of previously published, peer-reviewed scientific work demonstrating a coherent body of research and a significant contribution to psychological science.

The portfolio should include:

• A list of relevant peer-reviewed publications, including DOIs where available.

• Copies of the publications proposed for doctoral assessment.

• A statement outlining the candidate's individual contributions to co-authored publications.

Research may cover areas such as clinical, cognitive, developmental, educational, social, or organisational psychology. The originality, quality, coherence, and scientific significance of the publications will be central to the assessment of eligibility.

Research Statement

Applicants must submit a Research Statement outlining the overarching theme of their published work, its theoretical foundations, methodological approaches, and original contribution to psychological knowledge.

The statement should demonstrate how the publications collectively form a coherent body of research suitable for doctoral assessment, highlighting their implications for psychological theory, research, or professional practice.

A DOCX template is available in the 'How to Apply' section.

Academic Transcripts

Official academic transcripts and degree certificates from previous higher education institutions must be provided, confirming the candidate's academic qualifications and achievements.

Letters of Recommendation

Applicants are required to submit letters of recommendation from academic or research referees who can attest to their scientific contributions, research experience, and suitability for doctoral-level study.

English Proficiency

If English is not your first language, you should have or expect to achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.5, or an accepted equivalent qualification, unless you qualify for an exemption based on previous English-medium education.

Research Ethics and Integrity

Candidates must demonstrate that their published research complies with recognised ethical standards in psychological research, particularly regarding informed consent, participant confidentiality, data protection, and research integrity.

Where applicable, evidence of ethical approval and clarification of individual contributions to collaborative research may be requested.

Personal Statement

A compelling Personal Statement is required, outlining your academic and professional background, published research achievements, and motivation for pursuing a PhD by Publication in Psychology.

The statement should highlight your contributions to psychological science, research interests, career aspirations, and commitment to advancing knowledge and evidence-based practice.

A DOCX template is available in the 'How to Apply' section.
